Hi Al, Dave, and Sue,
Thanks Al for the thought provoking email. I am still mulling over the
information that you sent, but have a few comments/thoughts off the bat.
...
Anyhow Al, I think that you are spot on with the family connections and
how they tie to Elizabeth BLACKADDER. Like you, I am unsure who her
grandfather is exactly. He could be any of Thomas BLACKADDER and Agnes
COWIE's boys (except the first Thomas). Otherwise, I believe that you have
pieced together the correct lineage. The description of Elizabeth's
great-grandfather as having:
> opened his own engineering firm in Falkirk
ties in perfectly with the following 1881 census information (from the
LDS CD-ROMs):
The family were residing at Garrison St Park Entry, Falkirk, Stirling,
Scotland at the time of the 1881 census. The people listed at the
household were:
Thomas BLACKADDER M 43 M Falkirk, Stirling, Scotland; Rel: Head;
Occ: Engine Maker Employing 9 Hands
Agnes BLACKADDER M 41 F Falkirk, Stirling, Scotland; Rel: Wife
Thomas BLACKADDER U 15 M Falkirk, Stirling, Scotland; Rel: Son;
Occ: Scholar
Archd. BLACKADDER 13 M Falkirk, Stirling, Scotland; Rel: Son;
Occ: Scholar
John BLACKADDER 11 M Falkirk, Stirling, Scotland; Rel: Son; Occ:
Scholar
Alexr. BLACKADDER 9 M Falkirk, Stirling, Scotland; Rel: Son; Occ:
Scholar
Robt. BLACKADDER 4 M Falkirk, Stirling, Scotland; Rel: Son
Jas. BLACKADDER 3 M Falkirk, Stirling, Scotland; Rel: Son
Christina JENKINS 15 F Slamanan, Stirling, Scotland; Rel: Serv;
Occ: Gen Servt Domestic
The age and birthplace of the above Thomas fit pretty well with that
of Thomas BLACKADDER (m. Agnes COWIE) as he was christened 15 Mar 1837
in Larbert, Stirling (a stones throw from Falkirk).
I'm still working through all this in my mind, though.
As for the William BLACKADDER, there are several possibilities. The
William that Al mentioned:
> born about 1736, the son of Alexander Blackadder, Tenant in Edrom, and
> Isabella Wait.
is actually information for two different Williams. There was indeed
a William christened in 1736 in Edrom, but he was the son of John
BLACKADDER and Jean ENNERWICK. The William who was son to Alexander
BLACKADDER and Isabella WAIT was christened 6 Jul 1773 in Edrom, and he
died 11 May 1798 at age 24.
Here are the potential William BLACKADDERs for the time period 1720-1780
that I have in my database (listed chronologically). I'd be happy to
learn of information that can definitely rule any of these candidates
out as being the William mentioned in Bumpus' book. Also would be happy
to learn of the existance of more Williams in this time period.
1. William BLAIKATOR chr. 15 Apr 1722 Govan, Lanarkshire, Fa: Normand
Mo: Margaret MATTHIE
2. William BLACKADDER chr. 2 Jun 1723 Edrom, Berwick, Fa: William
of Whitelaw
3. William BLACKADDER chr. 29 Oct 1729 Dysart, Fife, Fa: Thomas
Mo: Margaret MILLER
4. William BLACKADDER chr. 9 Apr 1736 Edrom, Berwick, Fa: John
Mo: Jean ENNERWICK
5. William BLAIKETOR chr. 25 May 1738 Dunfermline, Fife, Fa: Robert
Mo: Elizabeth MOOR/MUIR
6. William BLACKADER/BLACKWATER chr. 24 Oct 1742 Duns, Berwick, Fa: John
Mo: Margaret GUTHRIE
7. William BLACKADER chr. 5 Jul 1747 Dysart, Fife, Fa: William
Mo: Elizabeth WALLACE
8. William BLACKADDER chr. 10 Jul 1750 Coldstream, Berwick, Fa: Andrew
Mo: Christian DARLING
9. William BLAIKITER chr. 1 Sep 1751 Coldstream, Berwick, Fa: George
Mo: Agnes BROWN
10. William BLACKADDER chr. 9 May 1762 St. Andrews And St. Leonards, Fife,
Fa: Alexander Mo: Mary JACKSON
11. William BLACKADDER chr. 21 Jul 1763 Buncle And Preston, Berwick,
Fa: Robert Mo: Elizabeth HENDERSON; died 22 Apr 1779; buried Edrom
12. William BLACKATER chr. 27 May 1770 Dysart, Fife, Fa: James
Mo: Margaret LESLIE
13. William BLACKADDER chr. 6 Jul 1773 Edrom, Berwick, Fa: Alexander
Mo: Isabella WAIT; died 11 May 1798; buried Edrom
I would throw away #'s 10 through 13, as they would have been too young
at the birth year of John BLACKADDER (m. Mary KERR). Numbers 11 and 13
also died fairly young.
The description of William BLACKADDER as:
> a millwright from the village of Port Seton in East Lothian
suggests he was from parts near Edinburgh. However, as William may
have moved to Port Seton as a young adult, it doesn't necessarily
exclude those who were born/christened elsewhere. As far as I can
see, we have 9 potential candidates (at least). Dysart and Dunfermline
are equally as distant from Port Seton as Coldstream, Duns, and Edrom
are. So, they all count as possibilities in my mind.
Do we have info that rules out any of #1-9 as potential candidates?
I'd like to learn of it if we do.
All the best for now,
Steve Karner ()
ps. Should we post these to the list perhaps?
