Subject: Colonial ships from England to America

Thanks for the URL on the ship passenger manifests. Once before I visited
this web site or sites but lost the address. Thanks for providing it. I see
there is a lot of new material being introduced as volunteers input new data
for these colonial era ship passenger manifests. This is a great resource. I
have looked at all the ship passenger manifest but alas, there is no Ralph
Blankinship listed there.

>From the information posted there it certainly does appear that ships were
crossing the Atlantic during winter months and sailing to Virginia. This
contradicts something I read earlier about prevailing winds not allowing
direct passage to the American colonies, and this was the reason they first
traveled the routes to the Caribbean islands. The routes to the Caribbean
also diverted them from the higher latitudes where weather condition were
much more severe. I'm still not certain that those ships listed as
departing Bristol, England did not, in fact, have an intermediate stop in
the Caribbean prior to their onward journeys northward to the colonies. I
guess that requires some additional research on my part. For the moment I
suppose we should take the information provided at face value and assume
there were a passages from England to Virginia.

It is interesting to note from the Encyclopedia Britannica historical maps
that the upper James River area of settlement of the first Blankenships in
Virginia was very distinctly under English control and not simple a land
division "claimed" by England. This lends further credence to the belief
that those who settled there were English men and women. I am just wondering
if people of other nationalities who settled these lands under the direct
control of England had any claim to headrights or if they simply were
required to purchase the existing land patents from other established
settlers once they arrived in Virginia.
