Went back and read the bylaws... appointing him wouldn't work since he's
not an elected board member... however, an emergency election would
undoubtedly take place and the asst. would be the logical person to run,
especially if he/she was the 2nd largest vote getter in the previous election.

Afraid I don't like this idea. I think it's much better to have 1 person
that learns the ropes and serves thru the entire year.
