Subject: [BOER-WAR] Missing Grandfather

My first request to anyone out there who may be able to help.
John Connell O'Brien (Corporal/Sergeant?) never returned from this conflict, and details are sketchy. It is known he embarked from either the Barracks at Kilkenny, Ireland or from Athlone, where he is recorded in 1897 and 1894 respectively . The East Kent Regt. 2nd Battalion were at these locations on these dates, and he may have been with that Regiment.
A long lost photograph showed him wearing a "pill box" type hat as part of his uniform. Due to his non return from the Boer-War, and no evidence of his death, my Grandmother was subsequently denied any pension by the Government of the day.
I would welcome any ideas from anyone, as several years' search have been to no avail, (pre Internet/computer age), and this medium may be more fruitful.
Regards and in anticipation,
Michael D. O'Brien
