The only Australian L. ACKERMAN I've currently got listed (see
www.pcug.org.au/~croe/ozb_1st.htm) is 2632 Tpr. Lawrence A ACKERMAN
of 3NSWIB who I understand was also in an Irregular British unit in the
Boer War.

There are a couple of George BRIGHTs who served in 1NSWMR and 6WAMI plus a
G. BRIGHT who served with the 2nd Scottish Horse.

According to John Price's book, the latter was a painter from Maryborough,
Vic. about the same age as your grandfather.

He also served during WW1. Did your grandfather? If so, get his papers from
Australian Archives as they should show any previous service.

I can't help with ship deserters and don't recall seeing any mention of the
'Shropshire' carrying troops.

Assuming your grandfather stayed on in Australia, let me know if you find
out any more about his Boer War service so that I can add him to the database.

Regards
Colin Roe
