Patrick,
Some notes on the history of the Lincolnshire Regiment at the time of the
second Boer war (South African War) of 1899 - 1902 may be of interest.
In 1895, the 1st Battalion, The Lincolnshire Regiment embarked from home
for Malta and the next year was redeployed to Egypt. It was one of the
British regiments that took part in the Nile Expedition of 1897-98, led by
General Sir Frederick Kitchener. It was present at the Battle of Atbara on
7 Apr 1898. Six months later at the end of that campaign, the battalion
formed part of Brigadier General Wauchope's Brigade at the Battle of
Omdurman. The battalion left Egypt and redeployed to Secunderabad, India
by 1899.
The 2nd Battalion arrived in South Africa in late 1899 and joined the 14th
Brigade under command of General Chernside. In Feb 1900 it began on the
long march which led eventually to Pretoria. It was engaged at the Battle
of Paardeberg on 19 Feb, having reached there after a forced march of 35
miles in 20 hours. The battalion reached Bloemfontein on 22 Mar and after
some minor skirmishes set out again on 3 May. It was engaged at Brandfort
and then the crossing of the Zand River on 10 May. The 2nd Lincolns
reached Johannesburg on 31 May and Pretoria on 4 Jun. On 11 Jul a force of
five weak companies of the 2nd Lincolns, a squadron of the Royal Scots
Greys and two RHA guns was attacked by a superior Boer force at Uitvals
Nek. Outnumbered and exhausted after a full days intense fighting the
survivors were forced to surrender. The battalion had five officers and 48
NCOs and men killed or wounded in this battle. The 2nd Battalion continued
to serve during the guerrilla phase of the South African War until the
peace in 1902.
The Lincolnshire Regiment was awarded the battle honours "Paardeberg" and
"South Africa 1900-02" for its service in the South African War.
The 3rd (Militia) Battalion was mobilised in 1899 and sufficient men
volunteered for overseas service for the battalion to be sent to South
Africa, arriving in Capetown in Apr 1902. The battalion was awarded the
battle honour "South Africa 1902" for its service in the South African
War. All three volunteer battalions provided men for service in South
Africa, gaining the battle honour "South Africa 1900-1902" for their
service in the South African War. The 4th Volunteer Battalion in
particular was used to reinforce the 2nd Battalion.
