Hello Theo,
There were 17 men called Lane who died during the Boer War but none from the
West Yorks. Sometimes memorial details are incorrect and although 2/West
Yorks were heavily involved in the war, the 1st battalion were not in SA as
a unit. The likleiest match would therefore be 2999 Pte. H.J. Lane 1st
battalion Yorkshire Regiment who died of disease at Bloemfontein 29/5/1900
and is buried at President Brand Cemetery in Bloemfontein. No individual
grave marker survives but his name is on the cemetery memorial.
Regards,
David

Boer War, was a native of Langley Mill, Notts and I think worked for the
Midland Railway Company. He is commemorated on a memorial at Derby Station.
Unfortunately, it does not list his first initial.
