My ancestor, Michael DUXBURY, lived in Birmingham in 1881, but was born in
Lancashire in 1855. His mother was in the US for a number of years between
1881 and 1901. According to my mother, this fellow deserted from the Boer
War and went to New York to be with his mother. Both were back in England
for the 1901 census.
A cousin tells me that the story he heard was that Michael deserted from
Edinburgh Castle.
Michael's son died in the US in 1926. I found him on the 1900 census and he
apparently came to the US about 1885. This suggests that Michael might also
have come about 1885.
Perhaps there is no Boer War connection at all. By the way, Michael was a
tailor.
