Hi Doris,
The casualty rolls show only one J. Rimmer and he was with the Cheshire
Regiment and 8th Mounted Infantry. Although you cannot be absolutely sure it
is him without any other corroborative evidence (principally knowing his
service number) it looks probable that it is. The details are:
5898 Pte. J. Rimmer 2nd Battalion Cheshire Regiment
Missing in action Osfontein 7/5/1900 - Rejoined
Taken prisoner Broederstroom 6/3/1901 - Released
Missing in action Glen 23/4/1902 - Rejoined
He seems to have had an eventful war. Men posted as missing were often taken
prisoner but as the Boers had no facilities to hold prisoners they were
generally released almost immediately they had been relieved of their
equipment and sometimes even their clothes and boots. Equally a man posted
as missing may have become detached temporarily from his unit and turned up
later. The roll doed not specify which in two of the three cases.
Regards,
David
