Hello Andrea,

The various Canadian contingents didn't operate as a single homogeneous army
as they comprised several different units which arrived in South Africa at
different points in the war from late 1899 to early 1902.

The various contingents were the Royal Canadian Regiment of Infantry (Royal
Canadians), 1st & 2nd Canadian Mounted Rifles, Royal Canadian Dragoons,
Canadian Scouts, Canadian Artillery (three batteries) and Lord Strathcona's
Horse. In addition, over 1,200 Canadian were sent out to serve in the South
African Constabulary in 1901. The 3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th regiments of Mounted
Rifles were sent out in May 1902 but arrived just after the war ended.

The Royal Canadians were heavily involved at the battle of Paardeberg
(18-27/2/1900) as were the 1st Mounted Rifles at Diamond Hill (11 &
12/6/1900). Otherwise the Canadian contingents were involved in numerous
smaller actions and skirmishes over a wide area.

Consequently, you would need to know your g-g-f''s unit before you could
ascertain specifically where and when he saw service in SA.

Regards,

David
