Hello Helen,

Having made an unsuccessful search for his attestation and service papers at
the PRO you have already gone as far as you are likely to in finding details
of your man's military career. You would need to know his unit before being
able to check on his entitlement to the Queen's South Africa Medal (QSA) and
clasps as the medal rolls are arranged by regiment, battalion, battery, etc.

Brewis seems to be a name specific to the north east. There is a J. Brewis
of the 2nd Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers shown in the casualty roll as
taken prisoner and later died of disease and of the 24 men named Brewis who
died in the First World War 20 were from the north east.

Assuming your man joined the infantry and assuming he joined a local
regiment (both big assumptions) his most likely regiments would have been
either the Northumberland Fusiliers or the Durham Light Infantry. However, a
man didn't necessarily join his local regiment and of course he could have
joined the cavalry, Imperial Yeomanry, artillery, engineers, etc., etc.
Although it's a bit of a long shot you might wish to check the QSA medal
rolls at the PRO to see if he shows up on either the Northumberland
Fusiliers or Durham Light Infantry. The PRO subseries references are WO
100/169 for the former and WO/201 for the latter. There will be rolls for
more than one battalion so you would need to check each one and bear in mind
that the names in many rolls are not always in strict alphabetical order.

I hope this helps.

Regards,

David

> Hello Listers,
> Can anyone advise me where to begin researching the Military
unit/history of my Great Uncle SEPTIMUS BREWIS, who was tarred and feathered
during his time fighting in the Boer War. I have been to Kew to look up his
Military records though sadly they were not there. I know that he came from
the Durham/Northumberland area - is there any likely unit he would have
served in?
> Unfortunatley the most Ii can come up with for him is his year of birth
and the fact he married in Newcastle Upon Tyne in 1909 !
