Hi,
New to the list.
Questions at the bottom.
Ancestor, George Boniface, killed in action 28 Jun 1901
at Helvetia, Hex River, Orange River Colony, South Africa
Albert Boniface, his brother, was my Great Grandfather.
Extract from copy of diary I have:
1899
Jan 11th
Albert left Bombay on board the Dinera arrived at Southampton Feb 2nd
1900
Feb 6th
George and Albert joined the reserves at Chichester
Feb 10th
Left Southampton on the Pavonia at 2:55pm in a snow storm, for Cape Town,
calling at Malta on the way.
Mar 20th
Pavonia arrived at Cape Town.
1901
George Boniface was killed in action 28 Jun 1901
at Helvetia, Hex River, Orange River Colony, South Africa.
He was on the left flank of the rear guard of a convoy.
Questions:
Haven't been able to find anything on the ships mentioned, can anyone
provide some sources or info?
Also haven't been able to pinpoint location mentioned, any good maps out
there that someone has that could be scanned?
Cannot imagine bringing the body back to England so I assume he must be
buried in South Africa, any ideas where he might be buried? A picture of the
grave would be the ultimate goal.
Anything anyone can add to the above gladly welcomed.
Regards
Steven R. Everitt (Steve ô¿ô )
