I am new to this list and to researching anything to do with the military.

I have an ancestor David Fred DOBBS born in Norwich Norfolk in 1872ish. I am not able to locate him on the 1901 census, but I know that he lived until 1952. I understand from family that he was involved in the Boer War. How do I go about finding out if that is where he was in 1901 or finding information on his military service?
