Subject: [BOER-WAR] Service Records for soldier serving 12th Lancers 1899-1903
Date: Mon, 22 Mar 2004 15:36:16 +0000 (GMT)
Hi there,
I'm hoping someone can help me here - I want to
know if service records or any other personnel
records in existence for a soldier serving in the
12th Lancers between 1899 and 1903, and if so
where they would be kept?
My great grandfather served with this regiment
and I have his service number - 4074 - and his
discharge papers which show he served 4 years 140
days and was discharged on 9th January 1903 with
a 12 month pension of sixpence a day.
This discharge paper also indicates that he lied
about his age when he joined the regiment as it
gives his age at discharge as 21 yrs and 10
months.
He was actually born on 8th February 1883, giving
an age of 19yrs and 11 months in January 1903. He
appears to have joined in about Jun 1899 when he
was 16 and a half but gave his age as 19. Would
this have been quite easy to do or would he have
had to provide proof of his age?
Any advice on where to look for personnel records
or campaign records for this regiment would be
very welcome
Wendy

I'm always happy to do lookups in the 1891 census for England and Wales, the 1871 for London, Middlesex, Worcestershire, Shropshire, Berkshire, Yorkshire and some parts of Wales and 1851 for Oxfordshire. Just send details and I'll see what I can find. If I've helped you perhaps you would consider donating a £ to Breakthrough for Breast Cancer for whom I'm walking a marathon (in my bra!) click on the link below to make a donation.
