That was my initial thought.

It is some 16 months after the registered death, and if the family were confused etc it could explain the difference. It was some 15 years after his death that his name appeared on a stone.

My best guess now (thanks to all the infor fromm other people) is that he either was teh A Higgs who died at Ladysmith in 1900 and with the passing of years his mother forgot the actual date (23 June 1901 on the stone and 23. Feb 1900 if he was the Pte A Higgs)

The stone doesn't read Killed as his sisters does from the First World War. Which suggests he may have died of illness whilst working as a farmer/ miner - which is a line of thought I hadn't gone down until I got info from this list.

All these suggestions add to Arthur Thomas HIGGS's charater - I shall keep all the note and let people in the future draw their own conclusions as I shall have to.

Thanks to all those who helped

Chris

Warning: gravestones can sometimes be misleading! I found a family stone,
which stated a son had died in August 1901 in South Africa. It turned out he
had died in June of that year in INDIA.

The date of death could be innacurate on your stone.
