For Gavin Meeser,
Hi Gavin,
Here is what I told Alistair and Judy Moffat:-
The CGA was raised and embodied in October 1899 from "Cape Colonial Volunteers", they numbered 373 initially but the figure increased to 560 during the war.
In 1900 they were mainly used on the western railway and west of the line and a small number were certainly under command of Sir C Warren against the Griqualand rebels. Generally they assisted in garrisoning a number of important posts.
Jacobsdal was attacked on 25 October 1900 and there were certainly elements of the CGA there then.
Durin 1901 detachments were often stationed alongside the Cape Town Highlanders and other local troops in the west of Cape Colony and other places reight up to the German SW African border.
From the casualty lists I see they were at Brugspruit in Oct 1900,, Wonderfontain in Feb 01, Naauwpoort in Feb 01, Mafeking in Nov 01, Omkyk in Jan 02, O,okiep in Apr 02 and Dasport Near Pretoria in May 02.
Attestation and other records will amost certainly be held in South Africa, exactly where I do not know. It may be worth trying to find a history of the Cape Town Highlanders as the CGA appears to be very often co-located with them and I have seen at least one reference by the CTH to the CGA.
Hope this helps,
Tony Lyons.
