Thank you to David and Colin for your replies. So sorry I have sent you on a wild goose chase with the wrong first name. Should be Arthur Butcher. He was not an Officer.

It is entirely possible that your grandfather sailed between India and South
Africa. Several regiments who were based in India at the start of the war
made a similar journey.

The most likely regiment for a man of your grandfather's skill is the Royal
Engineers. There is a published roll for the REs and this lists one G
Butcher. He is a Sapper with regimental number 28464. The information says
he received the Queen's South Africa Medal with clasps Cape Colony, Orange
Free State and Transvaal. He also received the King's South Africa Medal.
He served in the 42nd Fortress Company. In the remarks it says he went into
the Army Reserve in South Africa in 3 Jul 1902.

He could have been stationed at Mafeking. I have also checked the medal
roll for the siege of Mafeking and he is not listed here which means if he
did serve in Mafeking it was after May 1900.

If this is indeed your grandfather, you may be able to extract his service
papers from the National Archives in Kew. There are researchers who can do
this for you.

Good luck with your research
David

Hi, I am trying to find out some more info about my grandfather's service
from a few family memories. It is known that he was in Delhi from about 1891
to 1900 then served in the 2nd Boer War possibly at Mafeking. It is thought
that he was attached to a Post Office or Communications Reg. as he was a GPO
worker in England (Essex /E London). He was back in England by 1905 at the
latest as he married then and that was the end of his service.

Does this secenario make any sense to anyone, could he have gone straight
from India to S Africa? Any clues as to the Regiment. If he did indeed go
to India in 1891 he would only have been 14 years old....??

His name was George BUTCHER (no middle name) born in Shoreditch in 1877,
also lived in Essex around Alprahm.

Any help at all or background info would be useful as I am a complete
newbie to this period of history and military service. Thanks.
