Hi Judy,
There are two families of HOVEY enumerated in Sheffield in the 1901 census.
I'll send you images off-list.
regards,

Hi List,
I hope someone can help me re the following.
My grandfather George Henry HOVEY born in Sheffield abt 1873 and joined the
'Imperial Light Infantry' or 'Cavalry' on 26 Sept 1899 in Maritzburg SA as a
Trooper - regimental No 355. He served in Elandslaagte and Ladysmith,
according to his Queen Victoria medal. Previously he had served in the York
& Lancaster Regt for 5 years - discharge on purchase. A researcher found
this for me at PRO but nothing else.
When he signed up in Maritzburg his next of kin was a Mrs Hovey of 19 Dun St
Sheffield, presumably his mother. I have no records of his travels and
don't know how long he was in SA but I do know while he was there he married
(wife unknown, perhaps Annie or Johanna) and had three children. He lived
in Johannesburg at some time - worked for Kodak among other jobs.
Later he came to Australia with my grandmother Florence Dorretta Gravett and
his three children from his first marriage. It was before 1912 ( as my
father was born then in Western Australia) but I have no dates for his
movements.
I was wondering if there are any records available besides the Pro that
could give me more information re his war service, his address and first
wife. I believe he received a small pension as he was wounded in the leg
during battle.
