Dear list,

I confess to being confused about the award of medals and clasps during the
Boer War.

Going back to the Sapper Lobb I've mentioned before, he has the QSA with
clasps for Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal, SA1 and SA2.

Given all of these, what can I deduce from his service? What individual
actions might he have taken part in? I'm assuming that the 'spread' of the
medal and clasps indicates that he was there for the duration. Or am I
wrong?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Derrick Parsons

I would refer you to the following url which gives the qualifications for
the State clasps (eg Cape Colony), and lists the Battle clasps too. You should
note, however, that the recipient of a Battle clasp within a particular State
would not also be awarded that State clasp. In other words the issue of a
State clasp more or less signifies that the recipient did not serve in any major
conflict within that area, although he (or she) may well have been involved
in several lesser actions.

My own grandfather is an example. He was awarded the Cape Colony clasp, but
from his record of service it is clear that he was wounded badly enough in
some un-named ( or shall we say, "unclasped" ) action as to be invalided home;

Another peculiar quirk is that no one recipient could be awarded both the
Cape Colony and Natal clasps.

I trust that this is of help.

Hi Derrick:

Re the Bars to the QSA & KSA, as Sapper Lobb was in SA in 1902 (02 bar) and
got the QSA but not the KSA, he apparently did not serve for 18 months (or
more) in South Africa. He was also in SA in 1901 (01 bar). The CC, OFS &
Trans bars mean that he served in all three colonies\states but for each of
them it could have been at almost any time from 1900 to 1902 during the war,
ie he could have arrived sometime during 1901 and left in 1902 (though he
was there long enough for his unit to go from one place to another). The QSA
and the bars did not have a minimum period of service.
Re individual actions, well any for which a separate bar was not issued
(except those in Natal or Rhodesia, for which he did not get bars).
The war ended on 31 May 1902, so all his war service was with the 23rd Field
Company.

If he was a regular soldier, he may have had continuous service there, but
my grandfather's brother William Cassidy was with two New Zealand
contingents, the 2nd & 8th, ie Feb 1900 to April 1901 (returning to NZ in
May 1901), then March to June 1902. He got the QSa with the same bars ie CC,
OFS, Tr, 01, 02. He asked about the KSA in the 1930s from a veteran's home
(where they compared notes?) and was told he did not qualify.

Yours, John Wilson

Ray: There does not appear to be anyone by that name on the 8th Battery, RFA medal roll. I also did a quick check of the entire medal roll for the RA and could not find him. Are you sure he served in the Boer War? Regards. Dick Flory
