I am the keeper of the computerized database on the descendants of James
B. Boulton and his wife Sarah. James was probably born in Nansemond Co.
VA about 1738; by 1744 he is living with John and Elizabeth Jernigan
when they moved to Bertie Co. NC. I believe he was an only child,
orphaned by the age of 6. After John's death, Elizabeth moved to the
Nash/Edgecombe/Johnston area; James Boulton served in the NC militia
from Granville Co. NC. He was in the Crooked Creek area of Franklin Co.
by 1767 when he married Sarah. I believe she was a Strickland, but I
cannot currently prove that (which is what I'm working on.)
They began to buy land on Moccasin Creek, the dividing line between
Franklin Co. and Wake Co. NC, 3 miles west of Johnston and Nash
counties. They lived here until their deaths; James died in 1813, and I
believe Sarah died about 1826.
They had the following children:
Sherwood, who married Elizabeth Chamblee
a son who was probably named Nathan and probably died before his father
Benjamin, who married Ruthy Chamblee
James, who married Mary (Polly) Chamblee (my line)
John, who married Selah Massey and later Feribee ___
Ephraim, who married at least Elizabeth Bunn and later Nancy Ijams
Easter, who married Nehemiah Privett
Zillah, who married Mr. Peirce
Catherine, who married Eli Massey
Dianah, who married Reddick Massey
Benjamin and James migrated to Pickens/Greene Co. Alabama. Catherine
and Dianah migrated to Georgia. Ephraim moved first to Tennessee, then
to Marshall Co. MS. We do not know what happened to Zillah.
James was one of the largest planters of Wake Co. before his death. He
lived in Little River District, Wake Co. most of his adult life. His
wife joined the Poplar Springs Baptist Church (near Pilot, Franklin Co.
NC) in 1790. The majority of the family remain Baptist even today.
Some of the grandchildren were Masons.
We do not know who James' parents were. There was a Thomas Bolton in
Nansemond Co. as a tenant farmer, of an age to have been James' father.
Also there is an Isaac Boulter/Boulten of an age to have been James'
father, but neither name shows up very frequently in descendants.
Some of the grandchildren went to Franklin Co. Alabama (my line); some
went on to various counties in Texas.
Thanks for any help.
