The early discussion on this list is very interesting. My gg-gf was
Chesley Callaway, Sr. He was a son of James C. Callaway and Sarah Bramlett
(and a brother of Flanders Callaway who married Jemima Boone, Daniel's
daughter). I wonder if any of the listmembers are researching him. The
following is from my notes on him. Possibly this may be of interest to the
group.
"The First Military Surveys in Kentucky", by Philip Fall Taylor,
provides an interesting discussion of early surveys. Survey No. 1235/84,
for Evan Shelby, was of 500 acres on 13 Dec., 1782, by John Shelby, jr.,
Fayette Co., Ky., on the waters of Hickman's Creek. Isaac Shelby and Chesley
Callaway were chain carriers and Daniel Boone was the Marker. (Chesley got
out of Service in 1781). "Daniel Boone", by Bakeless, page 324, said Daniel
was a surveyor. In 1783, he was made deputy surveyor of Fayette Co. (page
327), "from 1783 to 1786 he made nearly 150 surveys ... as chopper and chain
carrier as well as surveyor". It said the Marker, marked the trees.
