Greetings,

I am still looking for any information on the KING family of Berwickshire,
Scotland. The name is relatively rare in Berwickshire, disappearing from the
census by 1860.

Charles KING, who married Janet SLIGH 30 Jul 1798 in Duns, Berwickshire,
Scotland lists his birthplace as elsewhere in Scotland. That narrows it down
a little, but not much. He moved into Berwickshire from outside.

He died 7 Apr 1846 and is buried at Bunkle and Preston.

I believe that I have found him in the Scottish Church Record CD-ROM at the
LDS FHC, but it is not proven. It is by process of elimination that I may
have found his birth. There are not many Charles KINGs born in Scotland
during the likely years of his birth. There are none born for about 15 years
after that. There is another born about 5 years earlier, but that extra 5
years puts him outside the likely range. So, the 1771 birth seems the most
likely. Moreover, some of the names of siblings repeat themselves in the
family.

I believe that he was born in Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland on 3 Apr 1771. His
parents, if this is so, would be James KING and Janet BAXTER.

This also fits in with the fact that KING is a sept of Clan MacGREGOR, the
name deriving from McGREGOR-McGREIGH-McAREE (meaning son of the KING).
Anglicized it became KING. Comrie would be close to MacGREGOR lands.

Does anyone know about my Charles KING or his birthplace and parentage?

Does anyone know what proportion of KINGs in Scotland are of Clan MacGREGOR
(as in McAREE-KINGs)? What proportion of KINGs are not of Clan MacGREGOR? I
know that there are unrelated KINGs in other parts of England.

Also interested in any other KINGs in Berwickshire. Charles KING's son Thomas
and grandson Charles KING are my ancestors. The younger Charles moved on to
Newcastle, England. His grandson William came to the US in 1924. His
(William's) grandson is writing this.
