I'm new to this list & looking for information about my great
grandfather, Walter Scott, and his father James, (James Walter?), an
innkeeper at Galashiels.

Apparently, in November, 1842, Walter Scott signed an
apprenticeship agreement with a Robert Dixon. This was guaranteed by
Andrew Dickson, manufacturer & auctioneer. Does anyone have any
information on either of these Scotts, or Robert Dixon or Andrew Dickson?
Walter was born February 2, 1827 at or near Linlithgow. His
siblings were John, James, Margaret & Jessie? His parents were James
Scott, believed born at Galashiels, and Ann Pollock. Walter Scott & John
Scott later emigrated to Canada.
