Subject: 1881 census: warning re Legerwood, Berwickshire
Date: Tue, 8 Jun 1999 22:52:09 +0100
Hi everyone,
I've just noticed on my copy of this that 48 people living in Legerwood
parish in 1881 with what look very much like Berwickshire parishes of birth
(i.e. Legerwood, Gordon, Westruther, Eccles, Duns, Channelkirk, Earlston,
Chirnside, Abbey St Bathans, Swinton, Mertoun) are listed on the CD-ROM as
born in Berkshire, England. This even includes 22 people born in "Legerwood,
Berkshire, England" but living at "Legerwood, Berwick, Scotland". In total
this affects one eighth of the Berwickshire-born population of Legerwood,
but I haven't come across any other Berkshire/Berwickshire mixups in other
Berwickshire parish populations. Perhaps the codes got muddled up a bit at
the transcription stage? I've seen more localised transcription errors, but
none affecting dozens of people in a single Border parish in one go before.
Using the powerful searching tools to hunt for Berwickshire-born people it
might be easy to miss one of the 48 Berkshire "born" (just happened to me).
Best wishes.
