Hello Border Listers,

I am wondering if anyone can help me find some clues to my elusive Nisbeth, Muschamp and
Lindsay ancestors:

William/Welam NISBETH, b. 1596
Married Christina GRAY
Son named William/Vilhelm NISBETH
William emigrated to Sweden in 1627 to fight in the Thirty Years war for the Swedish army.
Swedish records state that William was born in Scotland and that he was "descendant of the
house of Rochell." Do anyone have any ideas on where or what this "house of Rochell" is? A
family, a manor? There is some mention of his being from Berwickshire.

Thomas MUSCHAMP, b. 1580
Married Helena/Elin/Elinor LINDSAY
Thomas also emigrated to Sweden, probably in the early 1620s, again to fight in the Swedish
army. Helena was married earlier to a SWINBURNE, possibly of the Berwick-Upon-Tweed,
Northumberland area.

Was there a massive movement of troops to Sweden during this period, and were these
individual mercenaries or government authorized moves? Can anyone refer me to historical
references that describe this movement from Berwickshire or Northumberland?

I would appreciate any leads you can provide, either to the individual origins of these
people, or to the historical context of these troop transfers.

Best regards,
Jeanne Nelson
