I also thought it was reasonable to assume there would be something in the
paper so I had a look at the Jedburgh Gazette but I'm afraid I found
nothing. I checked the edition for the 15th July and the one for the week
after.
Altho this is the Jed paper you often get family announcements from other
towns and there is a round up of news from Melrose - but nothing.
Now the film reader in Jedburgh public library is on its last legs and as I
peered at the image it got fainter and fainter but I looked at all the
relevant sections as best as I could. Its possible I missed something but I
think your best bet is the local paper for Melrose - I assume there was one
but I dont know the title.
You might contact the Selkirk family history centre - they might be willing
to look and they do have copying facilities.
