I'm new to the list and have some questions that someone out there might
be able to answer. I pickup DAVID CANOVAN (CANAVAN) getting married to
CATHERINE GALLAGHER on Nov. 5, 1846 in montreal at the Notre Dame de
Montreal church. They are said to be of that parish. His parents are
listed as the late DENIS and BRIDGET CANOVAN (CANAVAN). They are all
from CO. CORK, IRELAND. I then picked DAVID up in the Brooklyn census
of 1855 where it is stated that he has a Daughter in Vermont in 1849,
a son in 1851, then children in Brooklyn. In the 1860 census it states
that the first child is born in Canada. I never find him anywhere in Vt.
for those years or for any births. I found naturalization papers for
DAVID CANAVAN in 1851(N.Y.) and the signature matches three other
documents. He is listed in Mann. directory in 1851 then regularly in
Brooklyn from 1852 until he dies. I just received birth records for the
first two children, both of the above parish. The first is born Dec. of
1848 and the second Nov. of 1850. I am guessing David lied about being
in the U.S. the required 3 years. His witness is one Denis Canavan. They
were witnesses for each other. Could they have been of the above parish
and really lived in Vermont? I've been up there once and it seems to me
that even though it isn't very far it is far without a car. Any
suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
