Sharon, you have the basic tenant right, however, the time limitation is in
error. StatsCan maintain that the Privacy Act ties their hands from EVER
RELEASING a census beyond the current 1901. The 1901 was released after 93
years which is normal, to the Public Archives. However, after 1906, all
census material was gathered under new acts, which on the face of them,
prohibits any release of material, other than to the person so named. Rather
than sane minds prevailing, we have had retrenchment by StatsCan, who quote
legal opinions ad nausium, rather than advising the pertainent minister how
to resolve the issue. It is all bureaucratic mind-set either.. their is a
revenue issue too.
Currently, if I wish to view any of my family's returns in the 1911-51
censii, it costs me $50.00 (CDN) and a lot of aggrivation to see it and only
it. You must prove the person dead and that you are the 'responsible'
descendant of same as well. Not conducive or 'user-friendly'.. rather, turns
away all those but the serious researcher that MUST have the information.
