Subject: [Bos-St] Boston States Fair Wanted posters, videos, genealogy fair kit
Date: 14 Oct 99 21:57:13 EDT
Hello,
We had approximately 150 actual attendees and another 150 virtual
representatives at the Oct 2 Boston States fair with the submission of Wanted
Posters from all over Canada, the US as well as some UK submissions. I am also
taking the posters to Milton, Ontario tomorrow for this weekend's Global
Genealogy fair (see globalgenealogy.com for details).
A slower process will be the scanning and publication of posters to the Boston
States web page, as many folks were very creative and humorous with their
poster submissions.
I will not be able to accept any additional posters via email to take with me
as I will have no time to process them, so please do not send any right now. I
am still sorting out the late submissions to the fair!
I have a few interesting success stories where fair attendees, email contacts
and poster submissions brought researchers together. Please, give us feedback
on your results, if you have not already.
Also, I have just viewed a few minute montage from the videos taken at the
Boston States Fair. Full editing of the speakers and cutaways/candids of the
events will take a couple more weeks. But I can see from this sampling that
while the lighting was varied in the mill ( and there are no Spielberg
special effects), the audio is excellent.
Edited speaker videos will also require the review, approvals and copyright
clarifications by the speakers before we are able to actually offer
distribution, but we will need an estimate of how many folks are interested in
each to determine actual costs.
>From what I can determine at this point, each speaker video (about 1 hour plus
the question and answer period and some cutaways of the mill and fair
activities) would have an estimated purchase price of $13 plus $3 for shipping
if mailed. So if you are interested in the following speakers and topics,
please email me and we will let you know when/if each will be available:
"Quebec to Central Mass and Connecticutt before the Automobile" by Kay
Sheldon includes general genealogy issues for Boston States migrations and an
overview of the ship and railroad issues in the following two talks.
"Boston Public Library Ships and Maritime Resources" by Henry Scannell of the
BPL microtext department.
"New England Railroads" by Ronald Dale Karr, railroad reference author,
researcher and lecturer.
In addition, we will be compiling a genealogy fair "how to" kit with an
organization checklist, resource addresses, web site references, contact,
registration and press release forms, ideas for regional topics and
collaboration with other historical and genealogy societies, as well as a
video of selected aspects of the Boston States fair to illustrate many of the
planning issues.
This kit will be aimed at providing tools to help the smaller town societies
to work with neighboring towns as a group for regional fair topics
particularly relating to family groups and migrations. The cost for these
materials will will be approximately $25, depending on the response. So
please, let us know if this would be of interest to your local society.
For those who were not able to attend the fair, you can reference more program
info at http://bostonstates.rootsweb.com/CRM.htm
Please, expect a delay in response as I will be in Ontario for several days.
thanks
Sharon
