Chuck, what you're looking at here is a list someone kept in
1838 and 1839 on the stray animals which were caught by people other
than their owners in Barren Co., KY. If you went to a designated
location, say a local city hall or courthouse (or in the olden days a
community meeting place) there might be a book or ledger that someone
kept denoting when and where the animal was found, what kind of
animal it was and who had it.
The person who lost a horse or cow hoped to find a notation
about their animal so they could go claim it. The person who found
it hoped that the owner would pay him for the cost of feeding the
animal and perhaps a broken fence.
Now, farmers and ranchers register their cattle brands, so
the finder knows whose cattle wandered onto their property, and the
owner knows who might be keeping his cattle illegally.
So if we read this "Strays Report" below, we see that on 12
November 1839 Malinda C. Bowles found an animal (maybe the original
document will say more) on White Oak Creek. For modern researchers,
this might be a clue to indicate where you could look on a map for
her property in Barren Co., Kentucky. Old maps can commonly be had
through the local libraries or historical societies, or a university
or state historical society. These maps can often tell you who her
neighbors were---who were sometimes her relatives or in-laws, leading
you to more research.
We've discussed Malinda Holtzclaw and her husband John F.
(Jacky) Bowles quite a bit in the earlier years of the Bowles list.
You can read our discussions by searching through the archives at
this address:

In "Body" put in the name that you're looking for, since
you're looking for it in the body of anyone's message who has posted
to the Bowles list. In this case, it's Malinda .
Leave "Subject" and "From" blank.
In "List" put Bowles
In "Date" put 1997. (And when you're finished searching
through 1997, put in 1998 and so on up to the present.)
To our newcomers: you can always go to any list's archives
to search for information on the ancestor you're researching, whether
you're a member of that list or not. When you join a surname list,
one of the most productive things you can do is to go to that list's
archives to see what might have been said about your ancestor before
you joined the list.
Chuck, if you do definitly find that this Malinda is your
ancestor, please come back and tell us on the list. Many people may
be connected to this line. You might have a lot of "cousins"!
Very best wishes,
Linne
