Sorry, I've got a lot to say today (unusually).
Brailsford juxta Tupton, alias Little Brailsford or to
give it its modern name Ankerbold is a tiny hamlet
near Tupton and North Wingfield, Hill House is there
(today called Hagg Hill farm).
It came as a "fee" - part of the manor of Wingerworth
when Henry II granted it outright to the BRAILSFORDS.
I've been researching the feudal and manorial history
of Derbyshire recently and as a result of onformation
gleaned from lots of sources have expanded the descent
of those middle years a little:
1. Engenulf de BRAILSFORD & Hawise de DUIN
1.1 Engenulf de BRAILSFORD & ? (This may be spurious)
1.2 Henry de HENORE & ? (holding a fee in Burnaston &
Etwall)
1.2.1 Henry de BRAILSFORD and Isabelle del BORWES (as
above)
1.2.1.1 Sir Ralph de BRAILSFORD & Margery ? 1380,
1382, 1383
1.2.1.1.1 Henry de BRAILSFORD & ? b/a 1398 Grendon
and Blore etc.
1.2.1.1.1.1 John de BRAILSFORD & Susannah ? of Bupton,
Heanor etc.
1.2.1.1.1.1.1 John BRAILSFORD of Brailsford juxta
Tupton
1.2.1.1.2 Magrett de BRAILSFORD & Rafe de VERNON of
Hatton (Vis.)
1.2.1.2 Robert de BRAILSFORD
1.2.2 William de BRAILSFORD & Agnes ? (Bailiff of
Derby 1359)
1.2.3 Rev. John de BRAILSFORD (Rector of North
Wingfield 1349)
1.3 Hawise de BRAILSFORD & Robert de VERNON of Haddon
Also it looks more like Engenulf was second son of
Henry BRAILSFORD and Isolda de GRENDON, not last.
He seems to have inherited fees in Blore and Grendon
from his mothers marriages portion and was in receipt
of an income sufficient to distrain a Knighthood.
Brailsford juxta Tupton seems to have been retianed
from the manor of Wingerworth upon the division of
Brailsford estates when the senior male line expired.
Henore, or more correctly Heanor, near Ilkeston, has
come up several times as have Burnaston and Etwall. As
late as the 1600's "John BRAILSFORD of HEANOR" sold
Swanwick Hall to John Turner and another "of Heanor"
sold Roadnook Hall in Wessington.
These almost definately must be one and the same as
the BRAILSFORDS of Seanor as they inherited Roadnook
Hall from the Clays of Crich.
Henry de HENORE (1.2) may be one and the same as the
Henry de BRAILSFORD (1.2.1) listed above as his son -
the del BORWES connection may explain the inheritance
of fees in Burnaston, Etwall and Edensor that belonged
to William del BORWES his wifes father.
This family grouping can, by its very nature, only
ever be subjective but I'd like to see what you all
have to think about it.
I could go into a lot more details I suppose but it'd
be quite dull and I don't have all my research to
hand.
I look forward to any suggestions anyone may have.
Thanks
Ian.
