I am a new list member and have been reading all the archives. It seems that
there are quite a few that grow out on the same limb I do. The following is
for them...
WAKE COUNTY HERITAGE, NC pub by Wake County Genealogical Society 1983
#866 The Matthew Strickland Family
In Westmoreland, England, approximately 1637, Matthew Strickland I, was born.
He grew up, met and married Elizabeth Loreen (b ca 1641), Liverpool,
England. They came to America and settled in Isle of Wight County, Virginia.
From this marriage came five children: Matthew II (b ca 1663), William (bca
1665), Samuel b ca 1667, John b ca 1669, and Joseph b ca 1671. He owned
quite a bit of land as per his will probated in Isle of Wight County,
Virginia.
His oldest son, Matthew II, married Ann Braswell b ca 1669, d/o Richard and
Sara Braswell, and had ten children, all born in Isle of Wight County,
Virginia: Matthew III b ca 1702, Joseph b ca 1704, Jacob b ca 1706, Sara b
ca 1709, Ann b ca 1711, Elizabeth b ca 1713, Jane b ca 1716, John b ca 1719,
William b ca 1721, and Sampson b ca 1723. By this time, Matthew had
inherited land from his father and accumulated more of his own, as indicated
by his will probated in Isle of Wight County, October 25, 1730.
Sampson was the youngest and from things I have picked up, I believe he had a
lot of determination to do things his way. He married Christina A....and
from that union six children were born: Braswell married Polly Strickland,
Wake Co, Lott (d 1785), Matthew IV married Mary Perry, d/o John Perry of Bute
Co, (see more information in another article), Mary Ann, Obediah and Sampson.
He moved to Wake County as a young man and was a prominent farmer in Little
River Township. He was overseer of roads and served on jury several times.
His estate was settled March 15, 1782 in Wake Co, and since he died without a
will, Christina had to buy back most of the property from the estate.
I have reason to believe that she was Christina Alford but do not have proof.
Note: I used Matthew I, II, III, and IV to distinguish between them. It was
not shown like that in their wills, etc.
The above is the research of Mary Helen Strickland Buffaloe. She listed as
her sources Joyce Strickland Bennett,Salt Lake City, Utah, Wake County
Register of Deeds office, North Carolina State Archives: wills, estates, tax
listings and marriage bonds.
The above researcher also submitted another article on Matthew IV's family -
which is where I connect. If any of you want that please e-mail me privately.
