Dear Listers,

Some of you are wondering why standard presidential lineage charts do
not list our Rev. ROBERT BRACEWELL (1611-1668) among the ancestors of
36th U.S. President, LYNDON BAINES JOHNSON (1908-1973). Most stop short at
the generation of SAMUEL ELEY (1736-c.1771), great-grandson of JANE
BRACEWELL ELEY (c.1646-c.1711), the Parson's daughter.

A manuscript at the Lyndon B. Johnson Library in Austin donated by the
late James MacClamroch of Rocky Mount, NC, documents SAMUEL's descent from
JANE. The line connections through her son, ELI ELEY, and grandson, ROBERT
ELEY, SAMUEL's father. SAMUEL was born in Isle of Wight County in 1736 in
the same area (near Franklin, VA) where his great-grandmother JANE settled
c. 1680 and our RICHARD BRASWELL joined her a decade later. SAMUEL
married in Southampton County (VA) c. 1760 and died in Bute (now Franklin)
County, NC before November, 1771.

Famous relatives are great but let us remember with Seneca (4 B.C.-65
A.D.)

"He who boasts of his descent praises the deeds of another."

Carey
