Dear Listers,
We have reached a point in our DNA group project where it's time again
to stop and decide where we/re going with this. For my part, I need to
concentrate on recruiting more players--including more non-Braswells with
Braswell-sounding names. That's the only way we're going to sort BRAZELs
from BREAZEALEs, Irish BRAZILs from English BRAZILs, etc. More important
from our viewpoint, it's the only way some Braswells without matches might
ever learn their true family identity. Our FTDNA BRASWELL Project is now
big enough to accommodate these "non-Braswells" who are just as anxious to
establish their own genetic base as we are to see them do it. Everybody
wins. Then we won't have any more episodes like last year's when two BRAZILs
of unknown origin signed up but never returned their kits.
I hope it goes without saying (but I'll say it anyway) that my main focus
will ever be on the Braswells.
What can you do? Here's what I'd like to see happen--
(1) Everybody downloads the latest DNA chart from Foy's library
(http://www.braswell-genealogy.com) along with the lineage pages.
(2) See if your branch of the family is represented. If not, sponsor
someone. We cannot make out the features of a whole family tree with just
a few twigs. Every sample still counts at this stage.
Even if your branch is represented, do you have two, distantly-related
male cousins in the database? That's the only way to confirm that your
proxy truly represents your branch. Especially if your rep is one of the
"No Match" guys, you might want to get a "second opinion."
(3) If your branch IS represented (by someone of known cousinship), look
on the chart to see if there is a "mutation" in your representative's
genetic markers. LEWIS has one for the Steve/Henry group; In the
Carey/Britt group, BRITT, EDWARD M., and KEVIN CARVER each has one number
different from "The Braswell Haplotype" as shown by Carey, Bud, and Carl.
In each of case of detected "mutations", other cousins in these lines
need to be tested to see how far back the mutation started.
We say "The farther the better" since that distinctive genetic signature
will be carried by all the Braswell males in that lineage from the mutation
point on down to the present--an extremely valuable genealogical tool.
(4) Kevin Carver's cousins should continue to do nothing until we have
his full 25-marker results (thanks again to the generosity of Cousin J'Ann
Aman), Once his Braswell connection is confirmed, then his cousins, too,
need to start investigating how far back Kevin's one-step difference on Gene
DYS#439 goes. It would be a foolproof way of distinguishing Kevin's lineage
from all other CARVERs.
(5) EDWARD MIXON BRASWELL needs the Y-DNARefine (13 marker upgrade) also
since his score on the second gene (390) is one step off from the
"Haplotype" or Standard, We cannot positively confirm his Braswell
connection without seeing the other 13 markers.
(6) GARY L. BRACEWELL's full 25 markers would surely show some variance
from the basic 12-marker Braswell haplotype, A huge number of "transmission
events" (father to son) separate his lineage from ours--so many in fact
that I count it a miracle that we got the confirming 12/12 match on his
basic test set.
(7) We still need a well-documented donor who descends from JACOB
BRASWELL of Nash County (d.1832) for a
FREE FREE FREE test. The lucky winner will be the "comparison cousin"
for Nona William's proxy, T. JOE BRASWELL.
