Subject: [BRAY-L] Winfield Bray--North Carolina, Tennessee, Arkansas
Date: Wed, 29 Mar 2000 18:36:47 EST
Winfield M. Bray (1849-?) was the son of Jeremiah S. Bray (1812-1894) and
Elizabeth Lane (1808-1864) of Randolph and Chatham County, North Carolina.
Winfield enlisted on 6/7/61 in Randolph County, North Carolina as a private
and served in Company C, NC 1st Light Artillery. He was in the Confederate
Army until paroled 5/23/65 at Greensboro, North Carolina.
After that date the only information I have is a from a letter dated January
8, 1971 which states ". . . They had a brother named Winfield Bray. After
the Civil War he was so disgusted with Reconstruction he went to Mexico and
fought for Maximillian, got back to Arkansas and died . . ."
I have two copies of Deeds from Pittsboro, North Carolina
Deed No. 1 dated 9 January 1869 which shows him in Hardiman County,
Tennessee (he sells his interest in his mothers property to his sisters)
Deed No. 2 dated 25 November 1892 which shows him in Green County, Arkansas
(he sells some land to his niece, Hannah V. Ellis)
Jeremiah and Elizabeth Bray are my great great grandparents. I would like to
know what happened to Winfield after he left Randolph County, NC. Any
assistance would be appreciated.
