Dear members;

The discussion on the list about Oberholtzer's has prompted me to write.

About 1835 my ggfather came to Bureau Co, IL at about age 19 "driving sheep
for Oberholtzer". His name was Truman Culver, he m 1841 in Bureau Co, Lydia
Ann Slaymaker, who was the dau of Susan STONER and Daniel Slaymaker, former
residents of Frederick Co, MD, but who had lived both in Indiana and Ohio
on their migration to IL. On internet, I saw a m between a John STONER and
Elizabeth Oberholtzer.

The family has always assumed Truman Culver migrated from New York where
his mother and step-father lived. However, it is known as a bound boy, he
ran away at age 12, and then turned up in Illinois at age 19 working for
"Oberholtzer". Maybe he ran away from New York to MD or PA.

My questions; was there a company or something that ran sheep to Illinois
in the mid 1830's called Oberholtzers, or would this have been more likely
to have been an individual? Does anyone know if any Oberholtzers migrated
to Bureau Co, IL at about this time, and if so, where were they from?

Thanks, Ida Rodrick Wiese
