Subject: Keagy, Kagie, Kaiggey & Hagey? confusion
Date: Mon, 7 Sep 1998 17:34:32 EDT

In Eshleman's Swiss & German Pioneers of Southeastern Pennsylvania on page
202 I find information about land warrants for Conestoga and Pequea Creeks in
1717. (Vol. 19 of the Sec. Series of the Pa. Arch., p622) A warrant dated
November 22, 1717 for some 15-20 Mennonites. "The warrants are set forth as
follows: To Hans Moyer, 500 acres - Hans Kaiggey, 100 acres - Christian
Hearsey (Hershey) and Hans Pupather, 1000 acres - Michael Shenk and Henry Pare
(Barr) 400 acres...[more names listed]."

A few pages earlier, on page 193, "1712 - Further Swiss Additions About This
Year." cites Rupp as source for a list of settlers living in the Pequea Valley
at the time; "Johan Rudlph Budeli, Martin Kendig, Jacob Mller, Hans Groff,
Hans Herr, Martin Oberholz, Wendel Bauman, Martin Maylin, Samuel Gulden, John
Rudolf, Daniel Herman, John George Trulberger, Hans Mayer, Hans Hagy,
Christian hercy, Hans Pupather, Heinrich Bar, Peter Lehman, Melcher Brennen,
Heinrich Funck, Michael Schenck, Johannes Landis, Alrich Honench, Emanuel
Herr, Abraham herr, Melchoir Erisman, Michael Mller and Christopher
Schleagel."

A John Hagey is among the Swiss and Germans listed on page 268 of Eshleman as
being naturalized in Lancaster County PA May 19, 1739. Page 265 which lists
German Swiss naturalized in 1738 by the Legislature includes John Hagey.

I'm not sure whether Hagey is a variation of Kagie/Keagy. I understand that
Hans and John are more or less the same name. The Hans Keagy in my family
tree is Hans Rudolph Keagy, immigrant, b c1695 d 1748 prob. in Lancaster
County PA. A Kimmel cousin refers to him specifically as John Rudolph Keagy
Apparently my Keagy arrived August 24 1717 as part of 3 ships carrying
Mennonites to Philadelphia; he was 22 when he arrived. Our records say he
married Rebecca Patterson. According to the Flory newsletter, his children
were Jacob, Abraham, Rudolph, Henry, Susannah, Barbara and Anne, as listed in
his will in 1748 in Lancaster County.

Now, how do I find out if the Hans Kaiggey of the 100 acres of the land
warrant in 1717 is my Hans Rudolph? Is anybody following this family? Have
you seen the name as Heagy? We had it as Kagie and Keagy in our Flory
ancestry.
