Hi Diane,
Thank you so much for sending the Peter Rothrock descendancy chart. It came
through fine. That amount of information is just what I was looking for. I
appreciate it. Glad I could be of help to you.
Since you are new to the Brethren list you may not be aware of the web pages
the Church of the Brethren has. It is titled "Church of the Brethren
Network" and is located at:
http://www.cob-net.org/
It has links to many, many useful pages. The History and Genealogy page is
at:
http://www.cob-net.org/genhis.htm
At the bottom of that page there is information about _The Brethren
Encyclopedia_. It describes it and tells how you can order it. You could
probably spend a whole day going through the various pages and still not see
all of them. I have printed quite a few and placed them in a loose-leaf
notebook. They update and add more pages from time to time, so some of the
pages have changed since I printed them.
No, I don't think the LDS have microfilmed the 3 volume set. It didn't have
the stamp in it (showing it had been microfilmed) in the set in Salt Lake
City, as of several years ago. That set has since been moved from the Family
History Library over to the Joseph Smith building (former Hotel Utah). I
have not been over to that building yet (a couple of blocks away).
There are articles on Canada, Alberta and Saskatchewan, Quebec, Canadian
Pacific Railway and Colonization among others, plus US states and
congregations and family names. There are some Mennonite settlements in
Canada, but I don't know if they would have a copy of _The Brethren
Encyclopedia_ or not. Some Mennonites became Brethren, but I think most of
the Mennonites in Canada came from Russia at a later time. The encyclopedia
says (speaking of Brethren congregations), page 15, "On Oct. 24, 1968, the
Irricana and Bow Valley congregations became part of the United Church of
Canada, a union of Presbyterian, Congregational, and Methodist churches in
Canada." This was before the encyclopedia was made, so they probably would
not have copies of it.
The only biographical entries in vol. 2 (K-Z) are for Abraham 1798-1870
(married Mary Beashor) (written by Connie S. Andes of McPherson, KS) and for
Edgar Eli (written by Dennis D. Martin of Elkhart, IN, and Elgin S. Moyer of
Sebring, FL). Vol. 3 has a list of ordained ministers and elders including:
Abraham 1797/98?- 1870 (in vol. 2), David, Edgar Eli (in vol. 2), Eli Sanford
1849-1926, Horace Mann 1878-1959, John 1819-1860, Samuel 1793-1870, Samuel D.
1840-1921. The entry for John is probably the one you're looking for (even
though it says b 1819). Rothrock, John; 8-1819/2-12-1860; Mifflin Co., PA;
Monticello, IN; GV (1860) 159. [This means that there was obituary for him
in _The (Monthly) Gospel-Visitor_ in 1860, page 159. This might be located
at one of the Brethren colleges in the US. The web pages I gave you the
address for list the various colleges. I think there are 6.] There are also
3 entries for Rotruck: Dorsey Edward 1908-1941, Noah M. 1862-1947, and
William D.
Vol. 2, page 872, "Monticello/Pike Creek Church of the Brethren, IN, located
in White Co. The first Brethren families came to the area, in the *Bachelor
Run territory, from Mifflin CO., PA, in 1831-5." It does not mention John
Rothrock specifically. Monticello was organized in 1859 or 1865, so maybe
they don't have records from as early as 1831. (Bachelor Run was 5 miles SE
of Flora, IN (Carroll Co.). I did not find Peter Price mentioned in the
encyclopedia.
Merle Rummel (on the Brethren list) has said that someone is in the process
of producing a 4th volume with corrections and additional information. If
the date of birth (1819) for John Rothrock is incorrect you might contact
Merle and find out how you could go about correcting it. His address is:
Thanks again for Peter's descendancy chart.
