Merle,

The Bible is definitely a Berleberg Bible. Here's the description given to me
by our distant cousin in Kentucky:

"...I saw at Michael's house ... an old German bible containing only Joshua,
Judges, Ruth, 1st & 2nd Samuel, 1st & 2nd Kings, Ezra, Nehemiah and Esther.
This volume was about the size of an unabridged Webster's dictionary. I took a
photograph of the cover page. I researched it and found it to be a Berleburger
Bibel which was used by a German religous sect called Pietists (Pietisten)...."

The cousin who sent this to us was Bill Alverson, of Nicholasville, KY:
- I'm sure he wouldn't mind hearing from you on this. He can also
give you more information on the towns associated with the family. So many
documents, as well as the censuses, never give the towns - only the
counties. The Huffmans were large land owners, raising horses as well, and we
have frequent references to landmarks like Raven's Creek, where Michael Hoffman
Sr. was buried. I will dig through the documents and find some other references
for you. In the meantime, do contact bill and see what he knows. Tell him we
sent you. :-)

I would like very much to know whether there was a Brethren congregation in
Bourbon or Fayette counties, KY. These men, Henry and Michael Jr. (brothers)
were both slave owners. I don't know what stand the Brethren took on the
slavery issue, so that could be relavent as well.
