My gg grandfather, John Eller, was a member of the Brethren Church. He
enlisted into the Indiana 34th Volunteer Infantry, Company K. He also
re-enlisted after his first term of duty expired. He was an ambulance
driver. I suppose it was a non-violent way to assist. His unit was in
the "final battle of the war" in Brownsvile, Texas.
His brother, Martin, was in an Ohio unit that saw some pretty horrible
battles one of which he was wounded.
Their cousin, Daniel Garber, was a part of the Ohio 102nd. He was
captured, imprisoned, and later; a survivor of the Sultana sinking.

It seems many did non-combat duties, but were in the same jeopardy.

An interesting note:
Some records I've read show Brethren in the War of 1812 (one of my
ancestors-a Brethren-was killed in it).
