Jane, I have the encyclopedia. Know where to obtain both the CB and BC
publications.
In the Nov 12 1889 Gospel Messenger, my great-grandfather wrote an article
entitled "The Lords Supper ". It begins, "Under the above heading a series
of articles were written be Jesse Engle and published in the Evangelical
Visitor (River Brethren). He proceeded to explain why he decidedly
disagreed with Elder Engle.
Then in the Jan 28, 1890 Gospel Messenger, Elder John Forney wrote "A Word
of Explanation". It begins, "I notice in the Evangelical Visitor, No.1, of
January 1890, that Elder H. Davidson, in his editorial on page 9, makes a
note of my article in the issue of Nov 12, of Messenger. He seems to think
I charged Elder Engle wrongfully---."
That "the articles were evidently written with the view of attacking our
doctrine (River Brethren)." More dialog, and then Elder John says, "If
Elder Engle had only set forth the doctrine of the River Brethren church, I
should not have raised any objection to his article. My criticism was
brought out because he did not stop of using unbecoming and abrasive
language against the practice of our church------."
Needless to say, I wanted copies of what the River Brethren had written
which so emphatically upset Elder John.
I had without thinking written something in another response that James
Shuman corrected. I went to the web site he suggested, found the # for
the Brethren in Christ offices in Grantham, PA. I called this AM, they
connected me to the Messiah College Archives. They have paper copies of the
Evangelical Visitor and are sending copies to me. I did not inquire about
their other holdings but evidently this is where River Brethren material can
be found.
Thank You, JS
Mary Ann
