Evening List,
I have been following the discussion on the list regarding the
descendants of Adam Troup of Washington county, Maryland as it pertains to
Adam Shively, son of John Shively and Catherine Troup and namesake of Adam
Troup; and by chance found something on the family while reading a book.
History and Biographical Record of Washington County, Maryland; p.794
Thomas J.C. Williams 1906, reprintd 1992 by Genealogical Publishing Co. for
Clearfield Company, Inc.
WILLIAM E. TROUP, a farmer of Wilson District No. 23, residing on the
Old Troup homestead, near Mason and Dixon's line, was born October 13, 1854,
son of Samuel and Elizabeth (Brewer) Troup.
The Troup family is of German extraction, and having settled at an
early date in Washington County, has been for the past century a leading
agricultural family. Adam Troup, great-grandfather of William E. Troup, built
the old stone house on the L. R. Schnebly farm in 1780; it is one of the
oldest homes in that part of the County. His son Adam Troup, 2, grandfather
of William E., had nine children: John, David, Samuel, Adam, Joseph, Henry,
Catherine, who married George Ankeney; Rose, who married Michael Seibert, and
Ann, who married Samuel Seibert.
Samuel Troup, third son of Adam Troup, 2, was born on his father's
farm in 1809, and died in 1862. He married Elizabeth Brewer, who is also
deceased. Their children are: William E., Elizabeth, who married W. W.
Seibert (see sketch), and Samuel, a farmer of Wilson District. He was a
Republican in politics, and a member of St. Paul's Reformed Church.
William E. Troup was born in the house in which he now lives. Upon the
death of his father, he went with his mother to Mercersburg, Pa., where he
remained until 1877; he then returned to the homestead. His farm comprises
117 acres of fine limestone land, well cultivated. He has for some years
devoted much attention to conducting thrashing machines, hay presses, stone
crushers and saw mills. His politics are Democratic.
William E. Troup was married December 20, 1883, to Emma H., daughter
of David and Julia (Ankeney) Seibert (see sketch). Their children are: Julia
A., Jessie M., Ruth Cleveland, Elizabeth Brewer, Helen Seibert and Emily H.
Mr. and Mrs. Troup are members of St. Paul's Reformed Church.
