Were first cousin marriages common among Brethren. I realize that it was
a small and somewhat closed community in which such might naturally occur
often, but I like to know if there was any kind of pressure against such
marriages. When I find evidence that suggests such marriages in my family,
should that raise flags about the validity of my conclusions. Here is a
note
I have just written to myself.
------------
>Because the marriage of George Brown Replogle [son of Rinehart and
Catherine
>(Brown) Replogle] to Sally Brown [daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth (Ulrich)
>Brown] would be marriage of first cousins if Catherine and Jacob are
>children of the same Henry Brown, Shirley XXXXX of XXXXXX (letter to
>Dan W. Olds, 14 April 1997) has raised the question of whether one of the
>two Jacobs of the 1800 Bedford Co., PA, census could be our ancestor and
the other be the brother of
>Catherine Brown Replogle. Certainly a first cousin marriage should raise a
>flag in our minds and we should not lightly combine two Jacob Browns.
>Nevertheless, the appearance of the Replogle children among the heirs of
>Elizabeth (Ulrich) Brown at least supports the idea that "our" Jacob Brown
>could have been the one who administered the estate of Catherine Replogle.
