Subject: [BRE] Brethren and the Oklahoma Territory Land Rushes

Jan Tompkins sent the first message below, but the date of the land
run was left off this specific repeat. That land run did NOT refer to
the Cherokee Outlet ("Strip") Run. The Cherokee Strip land run was
September 16, 1893, and several Brethren from Kansas and elsewhere
participated in that land run, establishing several churches in the
Cherokee Strip (basically the northwestern part of present day
Oklahoma, minus the Panhandle). Included in this land run was one of
my ancestors and several ancestors of my numerous Oklahoma cousins,
some of which were Brethren.
The book, "A History of the Brethren in Texas and Oklahoma,
1891-1922", Edited by James H. Morris (Higley Print Co., Butler,
Indiana, 1922), does not include any of the names below that Jan
Tompkins shares, but the index is probably not inclusive and not being
on the list does not preclude their being Brethren AND settling in
Oklahoma Territory.
The men referred to below by Jan Thompkins, if I remember correctly,
were heading to Oklahoma in 1901. (Correct me, Jan if this is not
true.) The Wichita and Caddo lands, and the Comanche Kiowa and Apache
lands (basically in the southwestern part of the present state of
Oklahoma) were opened by Lottery, and I do not recall any Brethren
congregations (at least that survived 'til the mid 1900's) in that
location.
A correction to the final statement provided below that states, "But
on April 22, 1899, the US government held an event known as the
Oklahoma Land Rush." The correct date is April 22, 1889, NOT 1899.
The references for the land rushes, lottery, etc., above come from
John W. Morris, et.al., "Historical Atlas of Oklahoma", 2nd ed., U. of
Oklahoma Press, Norman, Oklahoma, 1962.
Jeffery Scism, can you abbreviate your references below to provide us
with a specific web site that provides names of the Cherokee Strip
pioneers? I came across such a site several months (or years) ago,
but have since lost the URL, and at the time, the list was far from
complete.
