Ralph, regarding your question about Brethren doctrinal statements. Few of
these exist, but there are several sources to which you can go to learn what
Brethren believed in the 18th, and 19th centuries. For the 18th century,
Alexander Mack, Brethren founder, wrote a small booklet around 1710 or 1711
called "Rites and Ordinances" with Ground Searching Questions, which states
the belief of the Brethren at the beginning.
for the 19th Century, consult the published minutes of the Annual Meetings
for each year of the century. These are published and indexed in books
published around 100 years ago. Perhaps, more to your liking, there is a
small, abreviated statement of Brethren Beliefs called "The Brethren's
Card." Its first editions appeared in the late 1800s, but it was republished
a number of times in the early 20th century. Copies of it can be found in
Bowman, "Brethren Society" published in the late 1990s and is available
today from Brethren Press, 1451 Dundee Ave., Elgin, Ill, or from Johns
Hopkins Univ. Press in Baltimore; See also the small paperback called
"Heritage and Promise" still in print at Brethren Press for around $8.00. It
has a chapter on Brethren beliefs and doctrines. Emmert Bittinger

Subject: [BRE] Brethren doctrinal statement
Hi everyone!
Perhaps Merle Rummel or someone else that is very knowledgeable in Brethren
history can provide what 10 items with scripture verses may have been
included in the old Brethren doctrinal statement. Perhaps there was no
formal written doctrinal statement during the period (say before 1830) but
if there had been, what would it include? I realize that a doctrinal
statement from a "present day" Brethren Church may be completely different.
Thus, I am looking for what the original Brethren doctrinal statement may
have included. Thanks in advance for any help to this question.
Ralph, a 4th great-grandson of Henry Nearhoof, a brethren minister
