My great-grandfather Abraham Ritter and his brothers John and Henry were
exempt from military service during the Civil war (even though 3
brother-in-laws and an uncle Jacob Ritter joined up). In the Kosciusko
Co., IN militia records it is only written "exempt" next to Abraham and
Henry, but after John it says "con'y opposed to bearing arms." This isn't
quite the same as "conscientious objector," but "conscientiously opposed'
is pretty close.
