To William Thomas. Bill, there were two main settlements of Brethren Thomas
families (related to each other) in Virginia, namely, Beaver Run
Congregation in Hamapshire Co. (now W. Va.) where the Brethren Arnolds and
Thomases settled, and in Rockingham County Virginia in the Beaver Creek
(Cooks Creek) Congregation near Bridgewater and Harrisonburg. The Rockingham
and Hampshire county Brethren are much intermarried, in the early years when
there were few Brethren congregations in Virginia (before 17=800), and when
the requirement that marry within the faith was strong. Consequently, the
two communities have Brethren families much intermixed.
George Andrews and I worked together a number of years on the Arnold and
Thomas lines, and I was the source of the information about the Maryland
Thomas connections to Hampshire county and the John and Catherine
generation. Some of this history is written up in Allegheny Passage under
Beaver Run families, but to obtain more detailed information, contact me at
my email address. Incidentally, Elder Samuel Arnold is one of my ancestors.
