I remember that there were other references to Gish in that book, but
that is for some reason the only one I made a note of. I remember also
that the book is poorly indexed (but then I'm picky about indexes). I
wasn't actually looking for Gish at the time, having been on the search
for Leslie/Lesley/Lasle/etc. in the area (about which any information
would still be welcome!).
But I do remember one thing about the Gish name there, something I
gleaned a long time ago on a trip down that way (50s?)---if only
Brethren Gishes went there, it must have been a 'jumping off' point for
some, as there is (or was) a Gish Opera House, a Gish apartment building
(very large endeavor right in town), a Gish drugstore that had closed,
etc....a lot of endeavors that don't ring as very "Brethren" and they
seemed to postdate the era of Brethren activity in the area.
Of course, it's quite possible that some number of not-related or not
closely-related Gishes moved into/through the area. Enough Gishes were
south of Bremen that there is an area there still called Gishton.
The other thing I remember from that trip is how hideously wasteful
strip mining is....not to mention the devastation remaining...
