I've just realised how we can check whether my theory about Elizabeth PLOMER
/ Betty DOWLING is correct. Did Temperance PLOMER have siblings:
Amelia, born circa 1817
Frederick, born circa 1818
Thomas, born circa 1824
Clementina, born circa 1825
James, born circa 1828
Alfred, born circa 1840
Note the large cap between James and Alfred. Was Alfred the first true
DOWLING child ?
These are the siblings of Temperance DOWLING in 1841.

Thanks again. I don't think she married a DOWLING, as she steadfastly
maintained that she was unmarried throughout the censuses. However, she
appears to be the daughter of a widow Betty Dowling in 1841, so I'm
wondering whether Elizabeth PLOMER married a DOWLING after her husband
John's death and changed her children's names to DOWLING. So is Betty
DOWLING in 1841 the same person as Elizabeth PLOMER ?
Does anyone have access to marriage indexes who could look for an Elizabeth
or Betty PLOMER marrying a DOWLING, between 1821 and 1841 ?
An interesting mystery !

Another thought -- the Temperance DOWLING who was buried on June 11th.
1896, aged 76 years, at Hinton Blewett might have been married to a DOWLING
so might have been Temperance PLOMER, the daughter of John & Elizabeth, who
was baptized on 25th. November 1821 at Hinton Blewett. In 1821, abode was
Hinton Blewett and father's occupation was Yeoman.
P.S. You can see why I have only cleared a few papers of my great heap as I
keep getting side-tracked with more interesting things:-)
