A big thank you to all the listers who kindly explained the difference between transcribed and scanned, so easy when you've been told in such a helpful manner. You really are a great List .

Hi Janet,

The transcription has Gordon's reading of each entry in the census,
written into a text file and therefore searchable.

The scanned part has an image of each page of the original census
returns books, so you can check Gordon's reading against you own
expectations and look out for ambiguities and mistakes. For example,
you'd be amazed (until you think about it) how difficult it is to
distinguish between "Farmer" and "Tanner" in some documents!

Being an image, it is not really searchable except by you looking
through each page in turn.

Hope that helps,

Ian
